"...They continued to act thus till they ravaged the district of Cuailgne…a deed from which sprang much mischief and contention between the two provinces; and in this manner they passed seven years without an hour's truce between them. Within that time Fearghus knew Meadhbh, and she conceived of him, and bore him three sons at one birth, namely, Ciar, and Corc, and Conmhac, as the poet says: 1. Meadhbh conceived in fair Crunchain Of Fearghus, who deserved not reproach, And brought forth triplets faultless, strong, Ciar and Corc and Conmhac. From this Ciar is named Ciarraidhe in Munster, and O Conchubhair Ciarraidhe is of his progeny..."- The History of Ireland, Book I, p.195
Fáilte go líonláithreán Ciarraide! Welcome to the website of Túath na Ciarraide. Túath na Ciarraide is a túath, or 'tribe'¯, of the Sinnsreachd faith. We are Gael Meiriceánach, the Gael in Diaspora in America who have preserved and reclaimed their native culture and beliefs. Túath na Ciarraide descends from the Ó Ciarraí family, which hails from Ciarraí (Co. Kerry), Éire (Ireland). The Ciarraí are the descendants of Ciar, son of Queen Méabh of Connacht and deposed Ulster king Feargus Mac Roith, who founded the kingdom of the same name in the southwest of Ireland. Túath na Ciarraide got its start in 1979 by members who chose to embrace, preserve, and live within the indigenous culture of our people, and is dedicated to reconnecting all of our people with our heritage, culture, and native beliefs. It has continued to grow as we research and learn more about our heritage and faith, and now includes several families in addition to the Ó Ciarraí family. Túath na Ciarraide is part of the Sinnsreachd movement, a cultural and religious movement which is dedicated to preserving and following the pre-Anglo culture and pre-Patrician religion of the Gael as a living, breathing way of life we call Sinnsreachd, a term that means 'customs of the ancestors' in this particular use. Much like the tribalist Ásatrú, Theodisc Geléafa, Forn Siðr, and other similar Germanic cultural religions, Sinnsreachd is what is known as an Indigenous Cultural Religion, meaning that it is a hybrid between the extant native culture and the indigenous beliefs- as found in folklore, customs, and traditions combined with research to fill in the gaps to create a whole entity- that is not a pure religion, but a culture with religious elements entwined within it. Our site is dedicated to helping others learn about the way of life and faith our family, clan, and túath. Much of what is presented here is specific to our túath, but is indicative of Sinnsreachd as a whole. The Ár Túath page gives a basic overview of our social structure and a bit about our túath. The Sinnsreachd page is a brief overview of Sinnsreachd as a whole. The Ár Creideamh page is a detailed overview of our faith and many of our religious traditions and beliefs in a modern perspective. The Tionscadail Agus Pobal page briefly covers some of the projects our túath is involved in. The Taighde page has a list of resources for those interested in researching Gaelic history, religion, and culture. The Nascanna page is a compilation of useful links for those interested in further information. Hopefully these pages will prove useful in sharing a bit about our family and faith.
